Fernandes Night Club
164 Fleming Ave., Newark, (973) 344-7671Â Friday ($5; women free), 9 p.m.-3 a.m.; Saturday ($10) 9 p.m.-3 a.m.; Sunday, ($5; women free) 9 p.m.-2 a.m.
Go deep into the jungles of the Ironbound and you’ll find the secluded Fernandes. It’s a great place if you want to dance till 3 a.m. They have live bands to get the crowd into the dance floor. People really want to dance here so when the band plays the men will quickly ask the woman of his choice to dance.
You have to move fast here especially if it’s a crowded night. It’s a good salsa meetup group in Newark.
They may play one song at a time or several but as soon as its finished, zoom everyone disperses from the dance floor. There are a few who linger, if it’s a couple or a guy not wanting to let go and trying to secure the next dance. Of course, if she lets him.
It can be difficult when they play one song, especially if there’s a connection. I would linger with her on the dance floor and make small chat and I’m thinking to myself, come on, play the next song.
Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn’t. If she’s a little timid, she may feel uncomfortable standing alone with me in the middle of the dance floor, with all eyes on us, so I have to let her go. Sometimes escorted to the table and sometime escorted to the edge of the dance floor.
I watch her slowly walk to her table as a tear rolls down my eye as the other vultures watch in anticipation. Waiting for the next song to play and pounce on my… anyway, you know what I mean. It’s still a great salsa dancing meetup group in Newark, you just have to act fast sometimes because there could be 5 or 10 guys pursuing the same woman.
Don’t worry if you can’t dance well, when a popular song plays it can be so crowded that nobody will notice your foot work. Salseros, it may be difficult for salsa on a crowded night but bachata will do.
Age ranges from legal to your grand father. Men can go casual or dress pants. The older gentlemen at times go with suits. The ladies got their high heels on with their matching salsa dance dresses. They have two bars and the lines are pleasantly short.
Fernandes is big and the parking is ok. I can’t really complain but sometimes you walk a block if it’s a very crowded night, which it usually is, on the weekends.

Lancers
459 Ferry St., Newark
(973) 344-2662
Friday-Sunday, dinner service starts at 6 p.m., dancing and bands play live, 8 p.m. to 2:30 a.m.
Lancers is good salsa club in New Jersey, its deep down on the wayside of the Ironbound. Actually, It’s only a few blocks away from Fernandes, which works out excellent.
You can’t miss Lancers, if you are on Ferry street just go the opposite way from route 21 about a mile and a half and you’ll see it on your right.
It gets a little darker as you get closer but we all need excitement in our lives.
If parking is not available you may have to walk a block but it’ ok. Oh, if some guys offer to watch over your car, don’t pay them. I rarely do because they’re usually drunk out of their minds and can’t barely talk. They’re always wearing one of those emergency vests. Dude, if you want to work and make money, I suggest you don’t come bombed. Anyway, that was my luck with them.
Moving on, as you reach the entrance there may be a group of people outside where men and women have there meetup groups. Keep your eye on one who interests you, so you can accidently bump into each other inside and have a dance.
It’s an immense place and you’ll notice it as soon as you enter. It’s a Spanish restaurant but around 10 p.m. people start dancing. The house band is good and they play all forms of latin music and the occasion club and reggaeton.
People of all ages go there, from young singles to your grandmother, excuse me, I meant your great-grandmother. If you are interested in cougars, you’ll definitely find one there.
When it’s girl’s night out, you’ll see the group laughing and swaying to the music in their chairs.
It’s a good signal they want to get down and dance, so make your move. Some nights could be good and some not, it’s a coin toss. Just have a good time.
It’s a good latin dancing meetup group in Newark.
Have fun, if not, just walk over to Fernandes.

Adega Lounge
132 Ferry St., Newark, (973) 589-8884
Sundays, 9 p.m.-2 a.m.; Wednesday-Saturday, 9 p.m.-3 a.m. No cover, except Sunday after 11 p.m., $5 cover charge for men.
Adega is a real flashy place, hip and cool. Mostly a younger crowd who are dressed casually and dressed to the nines. The ladies are ready to party and have fun.
People from all around New Jersey go there. Throughout the day they’re lounging in the restaurant area and than ready to dance at night.
Sunday is Latin night which starts at 11 p.m. I was there last week and they weren’t playing salsa or latin music. It was club and more like reggaeton. I like it but I was hoping they played salsa.
It would be great dancing on their dance floor with flashy light up colors. More people should ask the dj and manager for latin music. Come on guys, we are only asking for Sunday nights starting at 11 p.m.
There are so many other places in the Ironbound for dancing, just come on by.
